Tyree Wilson

Pos: EDGE

School: Texas Tech

Ht. 6’6″

Wt. 271

Games Watched: South Carolina, Houston, TCU, Baylor

One Liner: Long defensive end who wins with a towering frame, functional strength, and athletic traits

Strengths:

  • Elite strength. Wilson possesses generational strength from the defensive end position as a result of excellent shock in his arms and great leg drive to generate a bullrush and pushback in pass rush and run defense penetration.
  • Elite frame. Wilson has a massive frame with an 86 inch wingspan that he utilizes as a run defender coming off the edge. Wilson is able to defend mesh point RPO’s and read options by setting the edge and putting his 35 inch arms to use.
  • Good athletic ability. Wilson is able to use his leg drive and lower body anchor to generate some solid speed into the chest of offensive lineman where he uses that speed to convert to power. Wilson displays some short area bursts in pursuit as a run defender as well.

Weaknesses:

  • Adequate technique. Wilson needs refining as both a run defender and pass rusher, Wilson lacks hand usage and pass rush moves throughout his rush, and wins more through bursts or a bullrush generated from his functional strength. As a run defender, Wilson wins with his lengthy frame but could look to develop his diagnosis and keys to bolster his impact against the run
  • Marginal get off speed. Wilson looks stiff coming out of his stance more often than not, lacking a quick first step to jolt into the pads of lineman. This didn’t hurt him as much in school as he could make up for it with length, but he will need to improve his get off and reduce any missteps in order to time his rush efficiently
  • Marginal play recognition in the backfield. Regardless of whether Wilson plays as a 5t or gets reduced inside on certain plays, he will have to improve his backfield vision and understanding of concepts behind the line of scrimmage. Right now, he tries to win battles one on one more often, but even as a 1 gapper he will need to read the backfield better and gain more nuanced knowledge of blocking schemes and concepts.

Overall Assessment: Tyree Wilson is a raw but extremely high upside player who produced at an insanely high level considering a lack of well coached refinement in his game. Wilson has sky high ceiling with untapped potential that could be reached with the right coaching in the NFL. He possesses generational strength and a frame that defensive coordinators dream of having on their defensive line. Wilson isn’t an exceptional athlete, but he shows some bursts on tape that could get the job done as hands in the dirt base end.

Scheme Fit: even front 5t that could reduce inside on late downs

Pick Projection: Top 12

Grade: 6.61
